Taxi operators call off protest

วันที่ 2012-01-09 14:14:00 โดย BangkokPost - 4.13811779022217

taxi operators called off their protest rally in front of government house after the government agreed to set up a committee to find ways of solving problems arising from the the phased increase in the price of ngv set to begin on jan 16.

the agreement was reached after a meeting between representatives of the taxi operators, led by vithoon naewpanich, and the permanent secretary of the energy ministry, director of the land transport department, and director of the energy policy and planning office.

the meeting agreed to set up a committee, chaired by deputy prime minister kittiratt na-ranong, comprising representatives of the energy and transport ministries and taxi operators.

the committee was to find ways of solving problems resulting from the ngv price increase within four months.

the ngv price will begin to rise by 50 satang per kilogramme per month from jan 16. during the four months the energy ministry would issue coupons allowing taxi drivers to buy ngv with a discount of 2 baht/kg.

the agreement would be tabled for cabinet consideration on tuesday, jan 10.

early this morning, two groups of transporters rallied separately at two spots to demand the government delay the ngv price increase until next year.

the taxi operators parked their vehicles at the royal plaza and rallied in front of government house before sending their representatives to meet with the government.

the other group of protesters - operators of trucks and buses operating under a bangkok mass transit authority (bmta) franchise - parked their vehicles on the frontage lane of vibhavadi-rangsit road in front of the energy ministry and ptt head office.

they vowed to step up the protest by blocking more out-bound lanes of vibhavadi-rangsit road with trucks and stop operating the franchise buses from 4pm today if no progress was made.

the bmta, meanwhile, announced it would put free buses into service if the franchise buses cease services.
