the cabinet on wednesday approved in principle a budget of 11,026 million baht for rehabilitation of basic infrastructure and public facilities damaged by the floods, government spokeswoman thitima chaisaeng said.

of the total, 5,693 million baht is for repairs to infrastructure in the communication and transport sector, 137 million baht for monasteries and ancient sites, 1,379 million baht for schools, 3,201 million baht for water resources and irrigation systems, and 613 million baht for the defence ministry to repair equipment damaged in flood relief operations.

the budget was proposed by the committee for rehabilitation of flood victims.

ms thitima said the committee had found it necessary that facilities damaged by floods be urgently repaired and be open for normal services to help create a feeling of confidence in the population.

she said prime minister yingluck shinawatra stressed the need for agencies to be strictly transparent in their spending and the properly arrange their priorities.

in a press conference broadcast live nationwide on nbt, mr virabongsa, chairman of the strategic committee for reconstruction and future development, assured the public that the total amount of loans to be acquired will be limited to the need for infrastructure construction projects.

there should be no worries. the funds would be used efficiently and transparently, he said.

the founders and co-ceos of canadian telecoms company research in motion, jim balsillie and mike lazaridis resigned, paving the way for a change at the helm of the blackberry phone-maker.

"there comes a time in the growth of every successful company when the founders recognize the need to pass the baton to new leadership," lazaridis said in a statement.

he added that the company was "entering a new phase, and we felt it was time for a new leader to take it through that phase and beyond."

research in motion president and co-ceo mike lazaridis, seen here, and co-ceo jim balsillie, have announced their resignations from the canadian telecoms company.
